Got Lymphedema? Get an active lifestyle

  • There’s good news for sufferers of lymphedema – you can live a healthy, active life! In fact, according to the article “Exercise for Lymphedema Benefits Supported by Studies” by Bonnie B. Lasinski, “exercise is an essential component of lymphedema treatment because the movements of muscle and joint pumps increase the rate of lymph flow up to 15 times above the resting rate.”

That’s great news for sufferers of lymphedema!

So what kind of exercises are appropriate? Here are a few different types that you should look into: Remedial exercises, which consist of repetitive and non-resistive motions that are performed while wearing a compression garment. Flexibility exercises, which are intended to help you maintain your natural range of motion. Resistive exercises, which promote muscle growth, can also help relieve symptoms. Aerobic exercise, which has been known to help lymph flow, can be as simple as taking a walk or riding a bike. Please note that it’s commonly recommended that you rest 20-30 minutes between manual lymph drainage massage and exercising.

The most important thing to remember – which you can probably guess – is that you should talk to your doctor before pursuing a particular style of exercise or developing a new routine.

But did you already know that exercise is a major factor in the success of a complete congestive therapy (CDT) program? If so, then hopefully you are already integrating healthy activities into your lifestyle. If not, don’t worry. People of all health conditions experience challenges when trying to start a new health and fitness routine.

The fact that you have read this far is a sure sign that you’re already on the right track!

Now it’s time to take the next step toward a healthier future! After all, an active, healthy lifestyle can be associated with endless benefits. Talk to your doctor today about creating an exercise plan that works best for your lymphedema treatment!
