They report that heat actually helped reduce edema. So I am wondering does someone have any studies that prove needle stick, BP, etc actually significantly increases the risk for lymphedema? less

I had a patient who had a crush trauma to his R leg, developed a clot and result was a swollen leg. We used a lymphedema management approach and once cleared for deeper tissue work( 8 months after injury) he reported tasting something for about a day after MLD with soft tissue work. This continued for several sessions. Seems that the tissue can hold stuff for quite a while.

Constance MillerHave a patient who I believe her lymphedema was neurologically generated, has anyone else had a similar situation. She had a very large arm with pain in the hand. She underwent carpal tunnel surgery and her swelling is markedly improved. Comments appreciated.

Thank you for your comment. RSD is a possibility. She tolerates compression, I wouldn't say it makes her feel better. We started with bandaging and moved to self management with a Farrow trim to fit. That did not contain the edema.

The Juxta fit adjustable glove is a good option as well. You could also just teach her how to wrap herself up to the elbow. Self MLD is also a good option.

Her physician ordered 30-40mm HG compression garment for the involved leg in a panty hose fashion but only shorts length on uninvolved side. Should she be in compression if she currently has no swelling?

Laney BrackmanI guess you could never say for sure what might happen in the future, but I had groin dissection because of melanoma and had no swelling for months and months. Staff Certified Lymphedema TherapistI completely agree with Laney. 30-40mmHg sounds quite high for someone who currently has no swelling. We have educated almost everyone we can and it is slow in getting the patient's referred. Are there other clinics that have a screening up and running and any tips on getting physician offices to refer?
