Some of out PTs want to know about using tubigrip on persons having just undergone total knee replacement. The goal would be to reduce post surgery edema. Any thoughts, info, or research you can share? Thank you, in advance.
Kim DorzHas anyone heard of a surgical procedure possibly called fat pad, lymph node flap? What are your thoughts?

Check out the VLTx (vascularized lymph node transfer) and other deep flap procedures at www.drmarga.com as well as some clinical studies that describe the use of flap transfers into the abdomen to address LL lymphedema and with recurrent infections. Exciting stuff.

Sounds like you are really getting some good experience! I have heard of the brushing technique but not sure where it originated. I would just be careful not to create erythema (too much pressure/friction) with the brushing. I'm not sure how effective this technique is.

Thanks Vickie! Good point about the erythema. I did wonder about being able to judge the amount of pressure used.
I see you other post. You are moving to Olympia? Exciting! Enjoy!
Kim DorzAny thoughts you can share on "brushing" to stimulate lymph movement would be appreciated. Thanks!

Were you thinking of the Brunnstrom techniques that we OT's use in pediatrics? I have never thought about it for lymph "stimulation". I would think that it may be an irritant to already sensitive skin though. Lets see what other people have to say!
Kim Dorz
No. A friend shared an article she read about using a long handled brush. The article stated that this technique stimulated the lymph glands to move lymph. I had not heard of this and thought this site would be a knowledgeable place to check this out.

I have seen posts about skin brushing in other Lymphedema forums. Some seem to have good effects. When I googled it just now a Youtube video came up. I wonder if it works like MLD - the brush performing it instead of hands. I'd like to try it.
Kim Dorz
Liz, if you do try it would you share your results and your thoughts. My friend is trying it and for now says it is very easy but no definite results as of yet.

Hi Kim, will definitely share what I find out. You are also welcome to check out my blog about other things I have tried so far. Look for LymphedemaGirl.
